Died: 7th April 1918; age 20; died as a German Prisoner of War. Also recorded to have died between the 5th April 1918 – 5th July 1918, whilst a PoW.
E.A.D.T. – Tuesday, 23rd April 1918 – Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smith, of 30, Ann Str Ipswich, have been notified that their son, Private Archie Smith, who was on active service in France with a battalion of the Essex Regiment, has been missing since the 25th March.
E.A.D.T. – Monday, 6th May 1918 – Mr. and Mrs. Arthur R. Smith, of 30, Ann Street, Ipswich, have received a card, dated the 31st March 1918, from their son, Private W. A. R. Smith, stating that he is wounded and a prisoner in Germany. He had been missing since the 23rd March.

In 1938, at Ipswich, William’s sister, Edith Kathleen Smith married Christopher Gordon Rushen. In 1919, Christopher became the first Labour Councillor for Ipswich. He served as Mayor of Ipswich, 1955 – 1956.
