Edgar is remembered on the war memorial at St. Matthew’s Church war memorial.

 

Born: 1888, Ipswich.

Died: 1918; age 30; of Pulmonary Tuberculosis at St. Martin’s Cottage, Tuddenham St. Martin, Suffolk. Served 290 days.

Residence: St. Martin’s Cottage, Tuddenham St. Martin.

Enlistment: Date: 9th December 1915; Age: 27 years; Occupation: Gardener. Height: 5ft 1 1/2ins, fair complexion, hazel eyes & fair hair. Next of Kin: Mrs. Edith Salter, of Wellington Road, Eye, Suffolk.

 

Illness originated July 1916, at Dovercourt, Essex – not the result of, but aggravated by ordinary military service – permanent – Haemorrhage of Lungs. Requires Sanatorium treatment. 29th July 1916 – Harwich Military Hospital recommended for discharge.

 

Discharged: 23rd September 1916, at Harwich, age 27 years & 10 months, Tuberculosis of the Lungs. Character – good.

 

Rank: Private; Service Number: JR/9/4878.

Regiment: Training Reserve 26th Battalion.

On the 12th May 1913, at Eye, Suffolk, Edgar married Edith Mary Jeffries, born 1888, Eye, Suffolk. They had 1 son:

Edward Robert David Salter, born Valentine’s Day, 1914 – died 11th June 1917.

Edgar’s nephew, Eric Roy Salter died 27th February 1945, during the Second World War, aged 21. He was ranked a Private, service number 5837413, of the Royal Berkshire Regiment. Eric was laid to rest at Taukkyan War Cemetery, Burma.
