In 1921, Charles’ sister Ivy Doris Mathew, 6 years & 10 months old, lived with their maternal grandparents – George Vincent, a blacksmith and shoeing smith – own account, and Agnes Vincent (nee Welham), of 34, St. Matthew’s Church Lane, Ipswich.
Their younger sister, Lilias Edith C. Mathew, 4 years & 10 months old, lived with their maternal aunt and uncle – Lilias Agnes Gilbert (nee Vincent), and Frederick C. Gilbert, a bricklayer, of 45, Onslow Road, Rochester, Kent.
Charles is also remembered on the war memorial at St. Augustine of Hippo, Ipswich.
1st Battalion
September 1939. Devonport.8th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Division.
In October 1939, they went to France.
May/June 1940 The Battalion were evacuated from Dunkirk and returned to the UK.
