Steam trawler ‘Ormonde’ was built in 1906 by Cochrane & Sons Shipbuilders Ltd., Selby, North Yorkshire. She was requisitioned by the British Royal Navy for war service in November 1939 as a minesweeper. In February 1940, the vessel was returned to her owner, Arctic Steam Fishing Co., Ltd. The Admiralty, in September 1940, once again requisitioned her as an armed minesweeper and fitted her with a 6-pounder gun. H.M. Trawler ‘Ormonde’ was based at Aberdeen, Scotland, with the M-S Group 69.
On the 16th February 1941, H.M. Trawler ‘Ormonde ‘, under the command of Temporary Lieutenant Philip Hamilton R.N.V.R., was on mine sweeping duties offshore from the village of Cruden Bay, when she was attacked and sunk by German aircraft. Lieutenant Hamilton, Skipper William Thompson Coull, and all 18 crew were lost.
