Suffolk Regiment, 2nd Battalion:
Taking two weeks rest behind the line in the Somme at Mericourt, the 2nd Battalion the Suffolk Regiment moved up near Maltz Farm, souh west to Trones Wood. The trenches were packed with troops for several days in preparation for the attack planed on the 16th August. The French 418th Regiment in co-operation with the British were to attack at 5.30 p.m. A rolling barrage commenced with the Battalions following the trail of destruction, on the left heavy machine gun fire checked the attack leading to a standstill, but on the right 250 yards were taken of the Cochrane Alley, where several Germans were captured. The Battalion returned to the original positions later that night.
