Ipswich Police Court – Evening Star, Monday 9th April 1906
Alleged refusal to quit. John Sadler, shoemaker, Bacon’s buildings, St. George’s Street, was charged with having refused to quit the licensed premises known as Criterion.-Alfred Aldous, the landlord said that at about ten o’clock on the night of Saturday week, the defendant came to the house the worst for drink, and began quarreling with people in the bar, one of whom he struck. He would not leave when first ordered, but did so when ordered out a second time.- Mr Josselyn elected that the defendant, who is very deaf, did not hear the first order to leave, and was only in the house for or five minutes.- Samuel Ellis deposed that Jack Sadler (defendant) came in and struck him on the face, and Daniel Dixey. In his evidence, he said that the defendant insulted the landlord by saying, “your beer is like you- no good.” The defendant, who looked good-tempered enough, told an odd story. “ I was passing the open door of the Criterion,” he said, “I saw this man Ellis in there. I had an animus against him for doing me out of a job at Norwich, so I looked in and said, “Sam, I should like to give you a good hiding’ That is all I did say. I walked out directly, and if that’s refusing to quit- well, it’s that’s the latest !” The Magistrate imposed a fine of 5s.
Soldiers’ Effects to Mrs. Alice Elvina Dixey – widow.

Daniel is also remembered on the war memorial at St. Nicholas’ Church, Ipswich, and also remembered on the Orwell Works Memorial Ransomes Sims & Jefferies Ipswich.

My dear sister Father and all I am going on well and hope you are all the same. I received your parcel and many thanks. We had a most enjoyable Xmas under the circumstances. The menu I have sent in Mabels letter. I am sorry to say that we lost one of our gunners when we were in action. His name is Dan Dixey and lives in Portman St. His boys go to Aubreys school so of course he would know them. Thank George for the cigarettes he sent me. And also Aubrey for the sweets. I had a letter from Mr. Bacon the other day and am now going to answer it. I have not got much to write about this time. We are in billets and are all well. Ask George to thank Mrs. Green for the things she sent and wish her a bright and happy new year. Now I must close wishing you all a bright new year
I remain
