Aircraft: Hurricane serial number: Z2748; based: R.A.F. Martlesham Heath, Suffolk. William was returning to base having just flown for two hours over the Thames Estuary with another aircraft  on an operational patrol. William’s aircraft made a short left hand turn. Then instead of following the other aircraft in to land, the nose of his machine turned towards the ground with the engine full and crashed and caught fire on the north side of Oakwood, Little Bealings, Suffolk.
