Died: 26th December 1917; age: 22; KiA.

Residence: Buckhurst Hill, Essex.

Rank: Lance Corporal; Service Number: 19030.

Regiment: Northamptonshire Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 58th Foot.

Formerly 98122, Royal Field Artillery.

William was 6 years old and living with his mother & her partner & siblings.

William was 16 years old, a Van Guard – Great Eastern Railway. He was living with his sister & her husband.

William’s father was George Balaam born 1853, Ipswich. Sarah & George separated.


In 1916, Buckhurst Hill, Essex, William married Susan Annie Piggott, born May 1893, Buckhurst Hill, Essex. They had 1 son:

Dudley Arthur Balaam, born 1917, Buckhurst Hill, Essex.

Dudley was KiA on the 31st July 1943, at Sicily. He was ranked a Corporal, service number 5728403, of the 1st Battalion, of the Dorsetshire Regiment. Dudley was laid to rest at Catania War Cemetery, Sicily.


William is remembered on the war memorial in front of St. Stephen’s Church, Buckhurst Hill, Essex. His son, Dudley is remembered on the Memorial Lychgate at St. John the Baptist Church, Buckhurst Hill.
