Appointed Lance Corporal before being sent to France with the Grenadier Guards, 1st Battalion, on the 31st August 1916.
Russel was wounded – gunshot to his left leg, on the 29th September, being evacuated to England on 3rd October. He was again sent back to the 1st Battalion on operations in France on the 14th February 1917.
Promoted to Corporal and then to Lance Sergeant in August 1917.
