Registered name at birth: Noel Garrard.
Born: Boxing Day, 1913, at 54, Woodbridge Road, Ipswich.
Died: 18th March 1945; age: 31; died of Beri-beri, Dyspepsia with Colitis, and Chronic Gastritis, at No. 1 Kinkaseki Camp, whilst a Japanese POW in Jinguash, Taiwan.
The forced POWs provided slave labour for the Nipon Mining Company, in the largest Copper mine of the Japanese Empire, in the village of Jinguash, Taiwan.
Date of Capture: 15th February 1942 – Fall of Singapore.
Residence: The Bungalow, Playford Road, Ipswich.
Occupation: Sales Manager for his parent’s Potted Meat business.
Rank: Private; Service Number: 5832405.
Regiment: Cambridgeshire Regiment, 1st Battalion.
The body was originally buried at the No. 1 Kinkaseki Camp. On the 8th July 1947, the body was exhumed, identified by Records, and reburied at Sai Wan War Cemetery, Hong Kong.

On the 19th March 1940, Solicitors Steward, Vulliamy & Aldous, of Arcade Street, Ipswich gave notice that after the expiration of 21 days after publication Noel Garrard intended to assume the name Noel Garrard Southgate.
In 1940, in Ipswich, Noel married Rita Ruth Raphael, a secretary to the Area Supervisor of the Potato Marketing Board, for the Ministry of Food – Potato Control Section. Ruth was born in October 1912, in Ipswich – the daughter of William Raphael, a master dealer in furniture – own account, and Ann Raphael (nee Ashton), of 168, St. Helen’s Street, Ipswich.
Noel is remembered on the war memorial at Rushmere St. Andrew, Suffolk.

The Battalion was attached to the 18th East Anglian Division (including the 4/5th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment)
15th February 1942: After the Fall of Singapore, approximately 620 of the Battalions were taken POW and later mostly died on the Burma-Thailand Railway.
