Death on or since: 24th July 1917; age 34; KiA.
Suffolk Chronicle and Mercury – Friday, 12th October 1917 – News has been received that Rifleman Leo Raphael was wounded recently and is reported missing. He joined the Suffolks last year, training at Felixstowe, afterwards being transferred to the King’s Liverpool Regiment. Previous to joining the colours, Rifleman Leo Raphael carried on the business of a house decorator and resided in Lacey Street. His wife would gratefully receive any further information at 72, Cemetery Road, Ipswich.

Enlistment Location: Ipswich.
Leopold joined the Suffolks in 1916, training at Felixstowe, afterwards being transferred to The King’s Liverpool Regiment.
Rank: Rifleman; Service Number: 235067.
Regiment: The King’s (Liverpool Regiment) 1st/5th Battalion.
Formerly 19804, Suffolk Regiment.

In 1901, Leopold’s mother, Ada Raphael, lived at 41, Cherry Orchard, Kidderminster, Worcestershire. She was 39, recorded as a widow and a Teacher of Music. Leopold’s brother, Reuben John Raphael, lived with their mother.

Leopold was 25 years old, a House Painter – own account. He was living with his grandfather.
William, 77, a widow; a House Painter – own account.
Leopold’s brother, Carl Rossini Raphael, born in April 1888 at Old Cattle Market, Ipswich, died on the 19th February 1889 at the Old Cattle Market, Ipswich and was buried on the 25th February in Section E, Ipswich Old Cemetery, aged 10 months.
Leopold’s maternal grandfather, William John Farman, died on the 21st February 1913 at his home, 111 Cemetery Road, Ipswich and was buried on the 26th February in Section Y, Ipswich Old Cemetery.
On the 14th December 1912, at St. Margaret’s Church, Ipswich, 30 year old Leopold, a house decorator, of 111, Cemetery Road, Ipswich, married 23 year old Jessie Larking, of 99, Cemetery Road, Ipswich, born 1889, Helmingham, Suffolk – youngest daughter of Walter Larking, an agricultural labourer and Sarah Larking (nee Hickford), of Helmingham.
Jessie and Leopold had one son:
Leo Leslie Raphael, born July 1914, Ipswich.

Jessie Raphael died in 1924 of Tuberculosis.
Leopold is also remembered on the war memorial at St. Margaret’s Church, Ipswich.
