Leopold joined the Suffolks in 1916, training at Felixstowe, afterwards being transferred to The King’s Liverpool Regiment.

 

Rank: Rifleman; Service Number: 235067.

Regiment: The King’s (Liverpool Regiment) 1st/5th Battalion.

Formerly 19804, Suffolk Regiment.

 

Medals Awarded: Victory & British War.

Leopold’s mother, Ada Raphael in 1901 was living at 41, Cherry Orchard, Kidderminster, Worcestershire. She was 39, recorded as a widow and a Teacher of Music. Leopold’s brother Reuben John Raphael, lived with their mother.

Leopold’s father, Barnard Raphael died 1908, Ipswich.

 

Leopold’s maternal grandfather, William John Farman died 21st February 1913, at his residence at 111, Cemetery Road, Ipswich.

 

On the 14th December 1912, at St. Margaret’s Church, Ipswich, Leopold married Jessie Lorking, born 1889, Helmingham, Suffolk – youngest daughter of Walter Lorking, an agricultural labourer and Sarah Lorking (nee Hickford), of Helmingham.

They had 1 son:

Leo Leslie Raphael, born July 1914, Ipswich.

 

Soldiers’ Effects to Jessie Raphael – widow.

 

Jessie Raphael died in 1924 of Tuberculosis.

Leopold is also remembered on the war memorial at St. Margaret’s Church, Ipswich.
