6th April 1942

John was killed during an early morning air raid on the R.A.F. airfield at Gambut, Libya ( a group of 5 landing strips captured from the Italian Air Force after the Battle of Tobruk in June 1941). The enemy bombed by moonlight and one of 80 Squadron’s Hurricane aircraft was hit and set on fire. This then gave the enemy a better aiming point, and the latter part of the raid concentrated on the 80 Squadron’s dispersal area.

Also killed during the air raid:

Godfrey Mallam; Leading Aircraftman; age 19; R.A.F.V.R. 80 Squadron.
