28th/29th May 1941

In April 1941, H.M.S. ‘Dido’ a light cruiser, was transferred to the Mediterranean, to reinforce the Fleet based at Alexandria. During the night of the 28th/29th May, H.M.S. ‘Dido’ was operating with H.M.S. ‘Onion’ during the evacuation of Sphakia and Heraklion, on the southwestern part of the island of Crete. At 08:00, just clear of Kaso Strait, H.M.S. ‘Dido’ was attacked by nine Stukas dive bombers. She sustained a direct hit on her ‘B’ turret, resulting in extensive structural damage and many casualties including soldiers of The Black Watch.
