Regiment: Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort), 8th Battalion – Infantry.

 

Original grave site at Gavrus. The body was exhumed, identified, and re-buried at Hottot-les-Bagues War Cemetery 15th November 1945.

Relatives Notified & Address: Son of Alonzo William & Hilda May Balaam, of Ipswich.

 

Father: Alonzo William Balaam, born September 1898, Ipswich. A bricklayer. During the Second World War Alonzo was an Air Raid Precautions Warden – part-time.

Mother: Hilda May Balaam (nee Butler), born 1900, Ipswich – died 1937, Ipswich.

 

Douglas is also commemorated on the British Normandy Memorial, virtually opened by His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, on the 6th June 2021.

 

 The first 8th Battalion landed in Normandy in June 1944, fighting their way through France.
