ARTHUR REEVE JARVIS

Arthur is not remembered on the war memorial at Christchurch Park.

 

Born: 10th February 1876, Ipswich.

Died: 9th July 1917; age 41; Killed by internal explosion of vessel at Scapa Flow.

H.M.S. ‘Vanguard’ a St. Vincent class Dreadnought Battleship, part of the grand fleet saw action during the Battle of Jutland in May 1916 seeing most of her service in the North Sea during WW1.
9th July 1917 H.M.S. ‘Vanguard’ was anchored in Scapa Flow north of Scotland and suffered a series of explosions in her magazines shortly before midnight, rapidly sinking with the loss of 843 men of the complement of 845 crew.

Height at 16 years old 5ft 2 1/2ins, height at 18 years old 5ft 5ins, ruddy complexion, hazel eyes & dark hair. Tattoos: Woman, True Love, heart & bracelet – left arm. Rose on back of left hand. A tree, snake & bracelet – right arm. 5 dots on right hand and ring on right 2nd finger.

Arthur was 33 years old, a Seaman for the Royal Navy. He was 1 of 127 on board the Special Service Vessel – Commander John Harvey.

 

Arthur’s father was Samuel Jarvis, born 1848 – died 1876, Ipswich.

 

In 1911, Suffolk, Arthur married Mildred Burley, born Theberton, Suffolk. They had 1 son:
