Donald is laid to rest at Ipswich Cemetery.

Born: 1919, Compeer, Alberta, Canada.

Died: 25th August 1941; age: 22; aircraft crash into the bank of the River Stour, Mistley, Essex.

Rank: Sergeant/2nd Pilot; Service Number: R/61222.

Regiment: Royal Canadian Air Force, 78 (R.A.F) Squadron.

25th August 1941

Aircraft: Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Mk V; serial number: Z6742; based at Middleton St. George, County Durham. The aircraft took-off at 20:17hrs on a raid to a cloud covered Dusseldorf, Germany. On the return journey home a fire broke out on board the aircraft. The order was given to abandon the aircraft. Donald bravely volunteered to stay at the controls to hold the aircraft straight and level for his four fellow crew members to bail out safely. Z6742 crashed at 02:27hrs into the south bank of the River Stour near Mistley, Essex. Donald’s body was found in the wreckage.
